Don't install Sitellite into a "sitellite" directory - Posted: June 9, 2004 - 7:26 AM

Hi folks,
Just a notice I've seen this problem a few times. When installing Sitellite for a test on your system don't install it into a "sitellite" directory. that is to say, don't do let the URL for it be this:
http://www.test.com/myteststuff/sitellite/index
When that URL gets parsed it can cause several problems, including blocking logins and not allowing you to render any pages.
Just FYI.

This is the first thing I did. You should have a note in the installation instructions not to do this! The other thing is now that it is installed in the sitellite2 directory, going to the site gets me to a directory listing. If I click on index, it doesn't parse in php, it just loads the text on the page. The configuration file may not be correct, but I find the examples that you have used in the configuration file, and your description of the variables to be entered for docroot completely cryptic and unenlightening. Any ideas? I am on a hosted server, so I may not have access to the .htaccess if that is the problem. Thanks,
David

Hi David,
We do have a note not to do this, right here :) Also, it is not an official thing - it's just my observation. A few websites have managed to install it in a "sitellite" directory so there must be a way to do it - but I find that most people can't figure it out so it's better to avoid sitellite ANYWHERE in the install url in any form. this includes "Sitellite", "sitellite", "sitelliteX", "sitellite1" or 2 or 3 etc.
No text string "sitellite" in the URL anywhere in any form. Should work fine.
If you have any other questions on install I suggest you do a search. Our stats suggest many people use our search sucessfully - that's why you don't see many posts - most of the folks using sitellite don't have a problem because they use the search :)

josh The search doesn't work. It has been giving the following error:
Server Error (-32300) transport error - could not open socket
A simple google search such as:
site:sitellite.org query
is a nice work around.

I know. It goes down everytime our host's server goes down, which I'm afraid there is nothing we can do about it except for change hosts, which we are in the process of doing.

Perhaps write a cronjob that checks every 10 minutes to see if the search daemon is running. if not then restart the service.

Thanks to everyone who's pointed out these search errors. The cause of the errors, as Josh mentioned, is that our server has become increasingly unstable with our current host, and we realized we hadn't put a cron script in place to auto-start the SiteSearch daemon on startup nor check up on it from time to time, but we finally got around to putting that up now, so SiteSearch should be much more available from now on.
The funny thing is that this script had already been checked into the CVS version of SiteSearch for a while now (to be released in tandem with Sitellite 4.0.14 soon) but we're running a few releases behind on the web site. You know what they say: never buy a car from a mechanic -- he's too busy fixing other peoples' cars to take care of his own. Same applies to our web site, we're busy making web sites for other people, and so ours falls behind at times...
Anyway, we've put that in place now. What time we have been spending on our own sites has been on two things: putting together a shiny new server, optimized to run way better than the current one, and a new Mantis-powered bug tracker I'll be putting up here on sitellite.org in the next day or so.
Cheers,
Lux

that will work only because the name of the app is sitellite not satellite :)
